New search for custody centre location welcome

12.00.00am GMT Thu 25th Jan 2007

Commenting on the decision of the Metropolitan Police to find a better location for a custody centre in Teddington, Dee Doocey Liberal Democrat member of the Metropolitan Police Authority said:

"I welcome this decision. It is about time the Met Police woke up and realised the strength of local opposition to building a major custody centre in a quiet residential area. It is desperately unfortunate that the police got this far and caused so much public concern. I have been inundated with calls from angry Teddington residents whom I know will now be celebrating this news.

"By concerted and joint action from the Teddington action group, Vincent Cable MP, local ward councillors and myself at the Metropolitan Police Authority this ill-thought proposal has now been sent back to the drawing board.

"In addition to going back to the drawing board, the Met must also publish openly the criteria on which sites for new custody centres are assessed, the location of each and every site considered and how they stack up against the criteria for building these new facilities"
